A Big ‘Thank You’ to Portland!

Thanks to all of the volunteer-tutors who recently attended the Ash Creek Commons Community ESL for Somali Women Tutor-Training Workshop this last Saturday, November 15. Also, a special thanks to the Somali Women’s Association of Southwest Portland and the Somali residents of Ash Creek Commons for being gracious hosts and supplying the trainees with delicious traditional Somali cuisine.

Lessons were learned, stories were shared, culture was considered, and the Somali food warmed everyone from within…

Hello and welcome!

If you are reading this, chances are you are interested in teaching English as a second language (ESL). Maybe you’re looking to learn more about the immigrant and refugee populations of Portland, Oregon. Or perhaps you wish to donate your energy and time to worthwhile causes and community improvement projects in and around the Portland metro area. If any or all of these statements apply to you, please explore this site and discover the ways in which you can make a real difference in the lives of Somali women residing in your community!

If you’ve ever been curious about Somali culture, have always wanted to learn how to teach English to second language learners, or just want to make a positive difference in the lives of refugees in Portland, you are urged to attend a FREE ESL tutor-training workshop on November 15, 2008 from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. in Southwest Portland.

If you would like to register and receive directions to this Community ESL tutor-training workshop, please click on the ‘Workshop Registration‘ page link to the right and respond with your name and contact information including an email address. Have you taught English to Somali refugees previously? What are your experiences with these new citizens? Are you from Somalia? Can you speak Somali Bantu and/or provide translations from Somali to English and vice versa? If so, please share your experiences and check back frequently for responses. Thanks!
